[SCENE 2: Sonora is logging on to her parents� computer. She appears to be bored]

SONORA
[VOICE OVER] Well my father isn�t due to be home for about half an hour so if this takes longer than that and he gets home, I may have to invest in a valium. [starts working on the computer] Okay, that works, that works.. Now�s let�s try the wonderful bookmarks he can�t seem to get to work. [opens the bookmarks] Hmm.. Okay it won�t let me click. Let�s try settings.. Oh for crying out loud. [clicks something] He has it set on double clicking instead of single clicking of bookmarks. Now why would he do that?? I swear the longer my father is on the computer, the less he seems to know. Soon he�ll be forgetting how to turn it on. [changes the settings and goes back to the bookmarks] Now don�t get me wrong, I really do love my father.. For the most part he�s a good father and he�s there for us when we need him. I just don�t get these things he does sometimes like for example.. He asks me to set up a chat program for him but does NOT want us knowing what his nicknames are or when he wants us to write e-mails for him but doesn�t want us to read them as we�re writing them.. He wants us to just write the words without concentrating on what they say all together. Now, Jason and I are not allowed the same luxury. And all we did was not want our chats broadcast and our e-mails read to the general public.

[FLASHBACK]

Okay maybe he wasn�t feeling very creative and just used his real name. AGE: 54. LOCATION: 427 Snowfall Lane, (city and state is mentioned) WHAT THE HELL!?!?! MARITAL STATUS: Looking. PHONE NUMBER: Available upon request. [sarcastic tone] Oh yeah because that�s a lot more private than your HOME ADDRESS!! DESCRIBE YOURSELF: Good looking, well hung, eager to please and willing to travel to meet people. Oh� My� God!! My father has turned into a religious freak whore!! [SCENE 3: Jason comes home. Sonora is on the couch writing in a notebook]

[SCENE 3: Sonora quietly opens the door from upstairs into her and Jason�s part of the house. She closes the door quietly. Jason is standing there behind her. Sonora doesn�t see him]

SONORA

JASON
Your father�s computer??

SONORA

A few logs.

Did you read them??

SONORA

JASON

[Sonora takes a deep breath and gets on to the computer and pulls up the logs and starts reading. Over the next few minutes she shows Jason several parts. She has tears in her eyes]

JASON

SONORA

JASON
I still say let it go. I really don�t think your father would do anything violent or anything but knowing you, you will worry about it.

SONORA

JASON

LEO

GAIL

JASON

GAIL
What about her?? She�s being mean to her father!! Now listen and listen good, stay out of his chat rooms, don�t go anywhere he goes, just stay out of his business all together!!

SONORA

GAIL
Sonora I have heard enough!! This has gone on long enough!! You have privacy and so does Jason, your father deserves some too!! I am sick of this and I am NOT listening to another word!! [gets up]

LEO
[looks at Sonora] Look, I know you mean well but you�re barking up the wrong tree. Trust me. [gets up and walks away]

JASON
Are you okay??

SONORA
He�s lying!!!!

JASON
I know, but there�s nothing you can do.

SONORA
We�ll see about that.

JASON
She�s not going to listen.

SONORA

JASON
So what are you going to do??

SONORA
I don�t know.

[SCENE 5: Sonora is upstairs and Gail is getting ready for work]

SONORA
Mom, can we talk??

GAIL
If it�s about your father, no. I am so sick of it. I should just have the internet cut off in the entire house

SONORA
[VOICE OVER] Spoken like the true queen of overreacting that she is.

GAIL
Look, I have more important things to worry about than what your father does on the computer.

SONORA
What if he�s talking to other girls and that Allie person really is a girl?? Are you saying you wouldn�t care??

GAIL
Yeah.. I am. Now please.. you know I love you. Please let this go, for me. [leaves]

JASON
[walks up the stairs] I think she knows.

SONORA
I doubt it.

JASON
She�s in too much denial. I don�t buy it. I think she knows and she�s not wanting you to know and think less of your father.

SONORA
Well him standing there basically calling me a liar and letting her bitch me out makes me think less of him more so than any words he could say online.

JASON
I know. She�s trying to protect you Sonora and him. Your mom isn�t dense, she knows what�s going on. She probably also knows that she can�t stop it and the most she can do is protect you from learning the whole truth.

SONORA
But I know the whole truth.

JASON
I don�t think she realizes just how much you know. I�m not saying she knows it all. I think she knows some, you know more and quite frankly she doesn�t want to know. She�s perfectly happy with things the way they are. And by playing oblivious and defending your father, she feels she�s protecting you.

SONORA
That doesn�t make sense.

JASON
Your mom rarely makes sense.

SONORA
She�s not protecting me though. If anything they are both hurting me by turning on me like this.

JASON
Then let it go or at least pretend you have. You�re not going to win this battle.

SONORA
I hate my father.

JASON
No you don�t.

SONORA
Well he just betrayed me. He sold me out to protect his stupid secrets.

JASON
True but I do think he loves you.

SONORA
He has a fucked up way of showing it.

JASON

SONORA
How could he do this to me?? [has tears]

JASON
[walks over to her and holds her] I don�t know sweetie, I don�t know.

[Leo walks in. Jason looks over at Sonora]

JASON
Let�s go downstairs.

SONORA
In a minute.

JASON
Try to stay calm.

SONORA
[nods] Okay.

[Jason walks downstairs]

LEO
So are we all squared away??

SONORA
Sure. [VOICE OVER] You bastard.

LEO
Good. Look you know that those people pretend to be girls or guys.

SONORA
Not all the time.

LEO
Yeah most of the time they do. This person came in pretending to be a girl and started talking about farts.

SONORA
[VOICE OVER] Wasn�t me but I have been known to start a discussion or two on the subject.

LEO
See what I mean??

SONORA

LEO
No self respecting girl talks about farts.

SONORA
[VOICE OVER] Oh whatever.

LEO
Now you thought I was cheating on your mother didn�t you??

SONORA
[VOICE OVER] Does the phrase �HELL YES� mean anything??

LEO

SONORA
Yeah. [VOICE OVER] You�re still a jerk.

LEO

SONORA

LEO

SONORA

And that Allie is really a guy, you believe me now right?? Right??

SONORA
Sure.

LEO

SONORA
[stares at him for a moment] [VOICE OVER] Could he be more desperate to get me to believe him and be on his side??

LEO
Sonora?? You believe me right??

SONORA

LEO

SONORA
[walks over to him, looking calm and confident] You really want to know what I believe?? I believe you�re lying your ass off and that Allie is a female, and you have been saying those things to her knowing she�s female and have been doing it in private messages.

LEO
Sonora..

SONORA
No.. you asked, I�m telling. Now if you want to have a fantasy world where you�re the next Don Juan, you go right ahead. If you want to tell people you�re looking for love, fine, happy hunting.

LEO
I think you�re confused.

SONORA
No.. I�m more clear and informed than you think. I know the truth. I know it all daddy dearest. Just admit it.

LEO
[sighs] It doesn�t mean anything. Yes what you�re saying is true but Sonora, I love your mom. I�m not going to leave her.

SONORA
Oh I know that.

LEO
I have never slept with any other woman.

SONORA
You know, it was bothering me before that you said all those things and did who knows what with those girls online. You want to play lover boy online go ahead. But you sold me out yesterday.

LEO
I would never.

SONORA
But you did. You stood there and listened to me and knew every word I was saying was the truth and you did nothing but deny it and make me look like the bad person.

LEO
It�s not a big deal to just play online.

SONORA
I�m talking about you betraying me.

LEO
That�s a strong word.

SONORA
It�s the truth. Now I know the truth. Mom won�t listen to me about it at the moment.

LEO
Are you going to tell her??

SONORA
[remembering how Gail said if it was all true she didn�t care] No. [VOICE OVER] Time to look good.

LEO
Thank you.

SONORA
I will keep your secret. I�m not going to tell anyone. Not even Jason. [VOICE OVER] Jason already knows but he doesn�t need to know that.

LEO
There really isn�t anything to tell.

SONORA
So you want me to tell??

LEO
No.

SONORA
[VOICE OVER] Translation: I�m trying to convince you there�s nothing to tell so you won�t bust me and my ass won�t wind up in a sling

LEO
Just keep it a secret for now and there really is nothing to tell.

SONORA
Yeah. [VOICE OVER] Insert a big �RIGHT� after that word.

LEO
I need to go run some errands.

SONORA
I do have one request.

LEO
What�s that??

SONORA
Don�t give out our home address anymore.

LEO
It was just that one time.

SONORA
Make it the last.

LEO
[walks to the sliding doors] Give me a hug.

[Sonora hugs Leo and he hugs her back close]

SONORA
[VOICE OVER] First hug my father has voluntarily given me in 6 years.

LEO
Love you lots.

SONORA
I love you too. [watches him leave and turns around, back to the doors] [VOICE OVER] That felt pretty good.

[Leo comes back and opens the door]

LEO
We okay??

SONORA
Sure.

LEO
Good. [leaves]

SONORA
[walks towards the stairs and walks down, feeling good about herself for standing up to him] You�re still a bastard.

[SCENE 6: Sonora is on the computer writing a journal entry]

�HOW DO YOU FORGIVE THE BETRAYAL OF A PARENT??�

I don�t think it�s really possible. Once a parent betrays you, what you thought you knew and could trust in that parent is gone. You grow up thinking your parents are a certain way and then you find out, usually in a harsh way, that they aren�t. You think you know them so well and as it turns out you don�t know them at all. They do or say something you never thought could be said or done by them. The betrayal cracks the foundation of love and trust you had in them. In time, the betrayal may be forgiven or overlooked, but the sense of security, love and admiration you felt for them will never be whole again. Once it�s cracked, no amount of glue can put it back together the way it was. When 9/11 happened the sense of security and belief that we were always safe was forever damaged beyond repair. The belief that everything was okay was shattered and had to be rebuilt, but never the exact way it was. The same is said when a parent betrays you. The relationship may heal and rebuild but will never be what it was before the betrayal. But with that and 9/11, I know I would rather know the truth and see what�s coming then be completely blindsided again like I was. It�s surprisingly less painful when your expectations aren�t so high.
