Double Standards

2002-01-07 - 11:40 p.m.

Double standards is something that everyone has either experienced, witnessed, or has a good understanding about it. What's kind of sad in a way, is that many people who hold someone to a double standard, they don't even realize they are doing it. They hold someone to rules and expectations they don't hold on themselves.

Some things are minor double standards but they are still there. For example, teachers expect their students to be expert spellers, be flawless when it comes to grammar, do their homework and excell in tests and assignments. Yet, their spelling is never required to be that good. In fact, teachers misspells a student's name it's written off as a harmless error, BUT if a student misspells a word on a report or an assignment, it's points deduced from their grade. If a teacher's grammar is off, it's quickly corrected and not advertised. If a student messes up in grammar, it's quickly brought to everyone's attention. Students are required to be able to know a certain amount of information to advance, but if they forget or they didn't grasp the concept of it, they are held back. Why should a student be the only one punished for not understanding something?? A teacher's job is to teach their students a certain subject and if the student doesn't get a good grade, the student is blamed and is labeled either "not trying or lazy" or "not smart enough". Shouldn't a teacher be held responsible, at least in part if a student doesn't learn what they are supposed to?? The teacher goes on teaching more classes, while the student has to repeat the class and hope they do better.

If someone breaks the law they will most likely be given a substantial prison term. If a celebrity breaks the same law, they are given probation and community service. Why should celebrities be given special treatment?? Why don't the laws apply to them?? You hear all the time that if they get convicted they stand up to so many years in prison but they never get it. Those celebrities that do get prison terms, usually get under 2 years, and they get to come and go as they please in a prison that looks like the latest 5 star country club. If someone who isn't famous gets busted for drugs they are sent to prison and labeled a druggie. If a celebrity gets busted for drugs, they get sent to a luxury rehab center. What kind of message is that sending??

Another double standard is the way men and women are looked upon. If a woman works full time, has a husband and kids, then some look at her as a bad mother who works too much. If a man stays home and does all the housework, and takes care of the kids, no matter how hard he may work, he's looked upon by some as being lazy. And why is it men's and women's pay aren't the same?? Most of the time your pay depends on your gender, not your qualifications. Is it just me or does it seem like jobs are gender organized?? Like, only women are supposed to be nurses, but if a man becomes one people think something is wrong with him. And people still have problems with women being in the military. Why is this??

Now as much as I hate to sound like I'm siding with other countries in issues with the United States, I fill I must comment on this. After the terrorist attacks, the United States demanded that the Taliban in Afghanastan hand over Bin Laden. The Taliban requested proof, the United States refused to show them the proof. Instead they showed the proof to other countries. The Taliban said that they would hand Bin Laden over once sufficent evidence had been presented. Now I can't help but wonder if it had been the other way around, where the Taliban was demanding the United States hand someone over would the United States just hand the individual over without evidence shown to them?? I don't think so. The United States would in fact demand as much as evidence as possible then offer to try the individual in their territory or in a neutral country. Was the Taliban asking for too much?? Wouldn't any country want the same thing?? Granted the Taliban eventually got the evidence from another country and still refused to do anything but I can see why they were asking for the evidence before just handing Bin Laden over on blind faith alone. Don't take this as my saying the Taliban was completely in the right because they weren't, I'm just saying I think the United States would have reacted in much the same way the Taliban did if it was the other way around. Also, if another country started bombing the United States, it's terrorism, the United States does it to another country, it's justifiable attacks.

Parents always demand to know the business of their children. They want the who, why, where, when, and how of every detail of their children's lives, yet they are unwilling to extend the same courtesy. Why is it that if a child wants to know details of their parents they are told it's none of their business?? If a parent wants to know the personal details of their children they should be prepared to share their personal details as well. If parents want details of their life private, they should allow their children to have the same luxury. If the children are doing something they shouldn't, granted they should be called on it, but again, so should the parents.

Double standards have been going on for years and they will probably keep going on. These are just a few. Rules are created for everyone, but not everyone is required to follow them to the same degree. Where's the justice in all this??
