Freedom Of Speech

2002-01-02 - 10:17 p.m.

Freedom of speech is a great thing. It's one of those rights that the United States population takes full advantage of but at the same time takes it for granted. You hear these commentaries on news programs, read editorials in newspapers and see message boards all over the web. Do you ever wonder just how different things would be if that one freedom was taken away?? Bill O'Reilly would be out of a job, politicians would get away with a lot more, and everyone would be living in fear that a simple statement of diagreement about something would land them in jail. Not to mention this journal would be a LOT shorter. My parents to this day still try to censor my cursing. It really annoys me, especially because my mother curses just as much if not more than I do. Doesn't freedom of speech cover cursing??

Without freedom of speech, I am certain that the following would not be tolerated.

For nearly 4 months we have been sitting in front of the television waiting for word that Osama Bin Laden has either been caught or killed. At the time of this entry being written, Osama Bin Laden was alive, location: unknown. Now I am not going to point fingers as to why this invidual is still out there unharmed. What I am going to do is talk about the government's updates on his supposed location. One day, they are confident he's in Tora Bora, the next day they say he's in Pakistan, then the next day they say he's still in Tora Bora and couldn't possibly have escaped into Pakistan, then they say there is no way he's in Tora Bora, then they say "Umm..we don't know." Maybe I'm expecting too much but I am getting sick of the yoyo game. Osama Bin Laden is obviously smarter than a lot of people have given him credit for. He'd have to be to have the world out to get him and still not be caught. Now I know different people are saying different things and it seems that anyone who talks to the press and claims to know what they are talking about gets quoted and their words published. All I'm saying is that I'm a little annoyed with checking for news updates and getting a completely different version as to what the government is thinking about the location of Bin Laden. Who do we believe?? Do we blame Afghanastan?? They want the bombing in their country to stop so of course they're going to say Bin Laden isn't there. Pakistan doesn't want Bin Laden in their country and if he was there they'd freak out. Do we believe our president?? A man who although has proven himself to be a good leader only goes on what he is told by people working for him. Do we believe the people in his cabinet who only know the details of things in THEIR field?? Do we believe the politicians who are hoping for free press?? Do we believe the press whose only real goal is to make money. Their only real loyalty is to the banks that holds their money. Do we believe the soliders that are actually there whose paycheck comes from the very organization that swears them to secrecy on certain things and whose favorite past time is covering things up??

Will Bin Laden ever get caught?? And if he does, who will be the first to announce it and do so correctly??
